Gleaming the Cube to Zorbing the Sphereing
July 5th 2008 00:02
We've lost that Zorbing feeling.
Zorbing or Sphereing as it is also known may not be an extreme from the perspective of danger and fatality, but it is certainly one off centre pastime. Simply put Zorbing is when a person gets inside a large plastic bubble and rolls down a mountain all the while tumbling and bouncing along with little control over gravity. The oxford Dictionary definition is "a sport in which a participant is secured inside an inner capsule in a large, transparent ball which is then rolled along the ground or down hills"
Not restricted to just going downhill they can be self propelled on flat ground and when taken onto water give riders even more control. Making walking on water an achievable miracle not just limited to JC in the AD.
Popular in New Zealand where the company Zorb Limited was founded there you will find specially designed runs of up to a half mile. The sport of zorbing first gained popular attention when Jackie Chan hopped inside on for the sequel to Armour of God in the early 1990’s.
Ever since then the novelty item has continued to fascinate many. The sphere is constructed with an inner cushioned ball surrounded by second layer of flexible plastic that serves as a shock absorber of sorts.
Not exactly a competitive sport, but more of an amusement park ride the bouncing, rolling, twisting over sized beach ball makes for a fun days entertainment in many countries throughout the world.
