Bound for Glory 2005 will get remembered for several reasons. The show marked TNA’s 12th monthly three hour PPV, a milestone of sorts. The Monsters Ball match between Sabu, Rhino, Abyss, and Jeff Hardy highlighted Hardy’s daredevil in-ring style. AJ Styles and Christopher Daniels entertained the crowd with a well worked 30 minute Iron Man bout. Given so much to remember you can mistakenly forget about the four way X-Division match which kicked off the evening. Sonjay Dutt, Alex Shelley, Roderick Strong, and Austin Aries set the tone for a memorable night with a fast pace athletic contest. The X-Division arguably peaked in late 2005 and the men in this match show why. Roderick Strong and Austin Aries made Internet wrestling fans buzz with excitement. The new blood gave an experienced X-Division wrestler like Sonjay Dutt fresh competition. Alex Shelley started to find his wrestling persona, a persona which eventually let Shelley shine as Kevin Nash’s ally. Inside the ring at Bound for Glory the four competitors outperformed the Ultimate X contest between Petey Williams, Chris Sabin, and Matt Bentley.
In the past few weeks we saw Austin Aries and Matt Bentley amongst other former TNA stars show up on Impact Wrestling to compete in the X-Division Showcase. Aries, as well as X-Division pioneer Low-Ki, will be amongst the competitors in the Showcase’s finals at Destination X. The winner gets a new TNA contract. After watching the Bound for Glory 2005 preshow match you might find yourself rooting for Aries so you can once again see him nationally on a regular basis.
