Night of Champions & the WWE PPV Glass Ceiling
July 21st 2009 18:54
Over the past couple of years WWE Pay Per Views (PPV) have lost the element of the midcard. The problem was created when the WWE decided to stop doing brand specific PPVs. Now every PPV has three big title matches (one for each show) and the rest of the card is filled with big names in non-title feuds. People have talked about the WWE having a glass ceiling when it comes to the world championships but now the WWE also has a PPV glass ceiling.
The reason I bring this up is I was looking at the card for this Sunday’s Night of Champions PPV. Night of Champions is the one night every title in the WWE Universe is on the line. Night of Champions is one of the rare opportunities for midcard wrestlers to get a chance to show the WWE Universe what they can do in the ring while on PPV. This is because the midcard titles (IC and U.S.) have to be a part of the PPV.
On Sunday Dolph Ziegler, Kofi Kingston, MVP, the Miz, Carlito, and Jack Swagger will get a chance to show off their stuff live on PPV. These are wrestlers who don’t always get a chance to wrestle on PPV which is a shame because they have more in-ring skills then some of the WWE’s PPV regulars. Night of Champions is one of my favorite PPVs because of the small break Night of Champions creates in the WWE PPV glass ceiling. I only wished there were more opportunities throughout the year for midcard wrestlers to strut their stuff on WWE PPV.
