Wrestler Spotlight: Shawn Michaels
January 27th 2011 01:56
At the start of January Shawn Michaels, “the Heart Break Kid,” was announced as the first inductee into the WWE Hall of Fame’s 2011 Class. Shawn Michaels’ retirement is perhaps the biggest story which broke during my 10 month hiatus from Seek Extreme. With the recent induction announcement I wanted to take time to look back on HBK’s career.
To be honest, looking back on Michaels’ career is no easy task. The man has been in so many great matches that no matter what something he accomplished will get overlooked. This month I published an article on Associated Content about a few matches which will suffer this fate (read here). Other matches which could’ve easily made my list includes his Survivor Series 1992 title challenge against Bret Hart, his match against Mankind at Mind Games in 1996, and his show-stealing Wrestlemania XIX bout with Chris Jericho. Then of course you have the classics like Shawn Michaels vs. Bret Hart Iron Man Match from Wrestlemania XII and Michaels’ final two Wrestlemania matches both with The Undertaker.
Perhaps what made HBK so great was his charisma. This charisma was on display when Michaels made his first live appearance on Monday Night Raw since retiring. Lead WWE announcer Michael Cole described the standing ovation HBK received by saying “This is awesome, this is awesome!” Michael Cole was absolutely correct too. Shawn Michaels received an awesome reception which he earned through having an awesome career. I’m very much looking forward to hearing what HBK has to say in his Hall of Fame acceptance speech. For now I would like to end this post by saying something myself- “Thank you Shawn Michaels, Thank you.”
