Warren Miller – A Brief History
Filmmaker Warren Miller is to Ski films what Walt Disney is to Animation and Cecil B Demille is to epic Cinema. Born in Hollywood California in 1924, his annual ski films have become an institution for enthusiasts. Since rolling on his first independently funded production “Deep and Light” in 1950 he has made over 750 sports films and published several books on his passion.
Joining the Navy and serving in the South Pacific during WWII after surviving combat he returned home and began working as a Ski instructor. Getting an 8mm movie camera he would film his buddies exploits on the mountains as a hobby.
It didn’t take long for his casual past time to gain notice in the festival circuits and in 1949 he started his company Warren Miller Entertainment. Ever since then he has travelled the globe shooting footage of the elite talents of the sport in every terrain and discipline imaginable.
Serving as narrator and Director on all his films up until the mid 90’s his knowledge and humour are as much a part of the Warren Miller institution as the exceptional camera work and ahead of the curve discovery of each fresh evolutionary leap in the skiing and snowboarding arena.
To cite a favourite film is impossible, for each new release perfectly captures its time and place within the history of the sport. So instead here is a list of some of Warren Miller’s more memorable quotes from Wikipedia.com:
