Happy Birthday Vince McMahon!
August 25th 2009 20:17
Yesterday was Vince McMahon’s 64th birthday which I learned from watching the opening segment of Monday Night Raw. I’m not a huge fan of Vince McMahon and I didn’t think it was necessary for the first 20 minutes of Raw to be consumed by a silly birthday segment. However, I do respect Vince McMahon and all he has accomplished for the professional wrestling business.
In the 1980s Vince McMahon single handedly changed the landscape of the professional wrestling business. Vince McMahon destroyed the territorial wrestling system and in return made professional wrestling a nationally marketed product. Vince McMahon is the reason we have monthly wrestling PPVs and is a major reason why wrestling became so popular in the 1990s.
I dislike Vince McMahon for two main reasons. First, his concept of professional wrestling is sports entertainment. McMahon cares more for the spectacle than the athleticism of professional wrestling. I personally prefer the athleticism. I would rather watch Kurt Angle/Chris Benoit from the 2003 Royal Rumble than Hulk Hogan/Andre the Giant from Wrestlemania III.
The other major reason I dislike Vince McMahon is how he treated the 2006 resurrection of ECW. McMahon set up ECW to fail. As a fan of the original ECW that leaves a bad taste in my mouth. However, there is no denying everything Vince McMahon has done for the wrestling business. I wanted to use this post to say whether you love Vince McMahon or hate Vince McMahon, you have to respect Vince McMahon.
