Tribute to Edge

As I get back to posting regularly here at Seek Extreme, I wanted to make my top priority paying tribute to Edge, “The Rated R Superstar.” Edge announced his retirement shortly after Wrestlemania XXVII. The retirement, triggered by health concerns, came as a shock to many. Appreciation for all the entertainment Edge provided us fans over the years as well as appreciation for Edge doing what he needs to do for his own wellbeing followed the initial shock.
When I think about Edge’s career the first match which captures my attention occurred in 2000 at Summerslam. Edge teamed with Christian to face The Dudley Boyz and Hardy Boyz in the first ever Tables, Ladders, and Chairs (TLC) match. The sacrifice all six men put into the bout left the crowd buzzing. The innovative match also acted as a foreshadow to some great Edge showdowns, such as his TLC match with Ric Flair on Raw in January 2006 and TLC bout with John Cena at Unforgiven 2006.
Honestly, besides his comedic antics with Christian I don’t think Edge’s microphone work standouts as great. However, Edge possessed an excellent nonverbal communication skill set to make up for his lacking promos. Perhaps no match displayed these skills better than at ECW One Night Stand 2006 when Edge teamed with Mick Foley and Lita to wrestle Terry Funk, Tommy Dreamer, and Beulah McGillicutty. At one point Edge nails the beloved Tommy Dreamer with a ladder and garners “F*** You Edge” chants by posturing to the crowd afterwards.
The brutal nature accompanying Edge’s most memorable matches risks leaving an unfair “garbage wrestling” stigma on “The Rated R Superstar.” Throughout his career Edge held his own against renowned in-ring talents such as Kurt Angle, Eddie Guerrero, and Chris Jericho. Edge combined a brawling style with high flying ability. Edge’s skill to sell injuries inside the ring added intrigue to his matches.
Overall Edge personifies the reasons I watch professional wrestling, dedication and passion. The commitment professional wrestlers bring to their occupation inspires me to offer the same commitment to everything in my life. Watching Edge announce his retirement on Raw and relinquish the World Heavyweight Title on Smackdown demonstrated exactly how much dedication and passion Edge put forth into his professional wrestling career and for that I just want to say “Thank you.”
