Tribute to Tommy Dreamer

All kids have role models growing up. The role models could be someone the kid knows personally or a celebrity of some sort. My older brother’s role model was Ken Griffey Jr. He had Ken Griffey Jr. posters hanging up in his room, collected Ken Griffey Jr. baseball cards, and emulated Ken Griffey Jr. when playing little league.
As a wrestling fan you would expect my role model to be Hulk Hogan or Ric Flair; the two biggest names in wrestling during the 1980s and 1990s. However my role model was somebody else. My role model didn’t wrestle in Madison Square Garden and wasn’t a multi time world champion. My role model wasn’t the most popular wrestler but to me he represented the most important characteristic somebody should have- character.
My role model was Tommy Dreamer. In the 1990s Tommy Dreamer wrestled for ECW (Extreme Championship Wrestling). Dreamer wasn’t interested in signing big money contracts or winning championships. In fact Dreamer turned down a number of contract offers from the WWE and WCW to stay in ECW. Dreamer also resisted when the company wanted to put titles around his waste. ECW was Tommy Dreamer’s passion and all Dreamer wanted to do is go out there and wrestle.
Tommy Dreamer was selfless. He sacrificed his own good for the betterment of ECW and for that he was my role model growing up. I felt Tommy never received the respect he deserved in the wrestling industry until a couple months ago when Dreamer won the ECW Title at WWE Extreme Rules. While the ECW Title is not as prestigious as the World or WWE Title, being ECW champion finally put Tommy Dreamer in the spotlight he deserved to be in.
Since Dreamer lost the championship this past Sunday I decided to honor him with this post. So to Tommy- congrats on the past few months, you deserved all the accolades you received as ECW champion along with much, much more. I look forward to watching your rematch under extreme rules next Tuesday!
