TNA Wrestling's Business Plan
February 25th 2011 22:33
Watching TNA Wrestling the past few months has left me wondering about the company’s business plan. As a fan I try not to worry about the business aspect but TNA Wrestling leaves me curious. Some of what TNA Wrestling does really seems counterproductive to what I imagine the traditional professional wrestling business model to be.
The way TNA Wrestling under-hyped Against All Odds last month and Victory Road so far this month triggers my intrigue. From what I understand PPVs are supposed to be a wrestling promotion’s main revenue source. Yet TNA Wrestling has spent more time promoting significant television broadcasts. The company last month hyped the Feb. 3rd Impact, a broadcast which aired 10 days before the Against All Odds PPV. TNA Wrestling has now spent the past few weeks hyping up the upcoming March 3rd Impact, a broadcast again scheduled 10 days before a PPV.
Hyping the eventful television broadcasts wouldn’t be so harmful if the company built excitement for the upcoming PPV simultaneously. However, just like last month, no PPV matches have been announced heading into the big Impact. If lucky, the Victory Road card will start taking shape on March 3rd. Otherwise the card will remain a mystery heading into the final week before the show. This gives fans little incentives for purchasing the PPV and will likely result in a lackluster buyrate.
This counterproductive business behavior will ultimately help lead to TNA Wrestling’s death. Of course I could be basing my observations on misinformed assumptions. For the sake of everyone involved in the wrestling business, I hope this is the case. Having two national companies creates jobs for wrestling personnel and provides fans more potential entertainment.
