TNA iMPACT Moving to Mondays
February 22nd 2010 03:10
I may be a little late jumping on this, but I just finished watching the complete press conference from last Monday, where Hulk Hogan and Dixie Carter announced iMPACT will be moving to Monday nights to go head to head with WWE Monday Night Raw. Wrestling fans are quick to refer to this move as the start of a new Monday Night War. However, I believe this to be wishful thinking. A war would require two relatively equal companies competing with each other. Truth be told, TNA has a long way to go before they can be considered competition to the WWE.
The improvements needed by TNA don’t just have to do with their in-ring product. The improvements needed by TNA starts with the TNA marketing department. Tommy Dreamer said it best on the Rise & Fall of ECW DVD, “You can have the greatest product in the world, but if no one knows you exist, they can’t watch.” (Warning- that may not be Dreamer’s exact wording) How many times have stories been reported online, that someone like Kevin Nash gets approached at an airport, only to be asked “When will you be returning to wrestling?” These kinds of stories show TNA needs to focus on product awareness.
On another note, TNA may be putting their loyal fan base at risk with the permanent move to Mondays. Part of the reason I usually watch iMPACT on Thursdays is because nothing better is on. Now that TNA will be moving to Mondays they will need to give me a reason to watch at 9:00pm. I typically reserve the 9-10 hour on Mondays to watch Two & a Half Men and Big Bang Theory. At 10 I would be more likely to turn the TV off, than tune into a half complete iMPACT show.
All in all, the bottom line comes down to two elements. First, TNA needs to improve their marketing in order to grow their audience. Secondly, TNA will need to give the iMPACT product a boost, in order to give current fans, who may already watch something else on Mondays between 9pm and 11pm, a reason to change their television viewing habits.
