Thoughts on 06/02 ECW

I remember being so excited back in 2006 when I found out the WWE planned to re-launch Extreme Championship Wrestling. That excitement quickly turned into bitter disappointment and anger. Vince McMahon and the WWE were ruining the legacy of ECW. I had my conspiracy theories on why I this was happening. But unlike some old school ECW fans I am willing to keep all that in the past and attempt to appreciate the WWE’s ECW show for what it is- an hour long show filled mostly with talented young up-in-comers.
Last night was the first time in a long while I sat down to watch ECW from start to finish. Outside of the main event none of the matches really were entertaining. The crowd seemingly being dead didn’t help matters either. However there are many interesting storylines developing. I’m intrigued to see where the Mark Henry/Evan Bourne story is heading. Seeing The Hart Dynasty spotlighted in the main event is great too. I hope The Hart Dynasty impresses WWE officials so they can eventually move to Raw or Smackdown!
But being an old school ECW fan the storyline that is most compelling to me right now is Tommy Dreamer’s chase for the gold. An admirable quality about Dreamer as a person is how loyal he is. He stood side by side with Paul Heyman in the trenches of the old ECW and Tommy has been a loyal employee to the WWE since signing a contract. Whether Tommy wins or walks away isn’t as important as Dreamer finally getting the spotlight he deserves in the WWE universe (even if that spotlight is likely to be the opening match of Extreme Rules).
