The Bones Brigade Search for Animal Chin
I figured a great topic for my maiden post would be to reminisce about the extreme sports film that forever changed my life.
As a child of the 70s growing up on the beach I was riding my first skateboard at about 3 years old. Back then the norm was to get a plank of wood, shave it down and chuck a pair of roller skate wheels on the front and back. Dangerous and incredibly temperamental, even the tiniest pebble could throw you onto the injury guaranteed asphalt.
Constructing 4ft half pipe ramps out of ply wood with a fibre wood frame we would attempt to hit the lip, with the ultimate aim of getting a wheel or two over the edge. Day in day out for endless hours my grommet friends and I would ride, practising freestyle tricks like 360s, tick tacking and crab walking.
By 1987 we lived to board and then came an event that would alter our perception of the sport for all eternity, the arrival of the Bones Brigade. Formed in 1979 by sponsor Powell Peralta the team comprised of legends like Tony Hawk, Steve Caballero, Mike McGill, Tommy Guerrero, Lance Mountain, Rodney Mullen and Mike Valley. Why my cronies and I were living in the past honing antiquated ideals, this L.A crew of daredevil skaters were revolutionising the landscape of boarding.
Directed by Stacy Peralta, (Dogtown and the Z Boys, Riding Giants) The Search for Animal Chin is the messiah of skate videos. Introducing a style that has carried on into the new millennium, pioneering the future with ollies, kick flips, big air and a hit list of moves now essential.
Shattering our insular community, these guys were sticking things we had only dreamed of. Carried to a higher level with grace and skill, jealousy and feelings of failure soon followed.
Watching the footage now it may be hard to truly appreciate the impact these moving pictures had back in the day, but its still easy to see that this is a bunch of dudes performing at a calibre few will ever achieve. There is magic in seeing a baby faced Tony Hawk crafting his iconic status.
