The Red Bull Air Race 2008 in Perth
The Red Bull Air Race first launched in 2003 is one of the most staggering displays of aeronautical precision in the world. Racing against the clock pilots must navigate through a slalom track of Air Gates..
Weaving and swooping at low altitude there is little room for error and as the sports following increases so too do the locations. What was once the bastion of air fields now sees the competition moved to a backdrop of natural wonder and cityscapes, often above the water.
Encompassing all disciplines of aerobatics the event sees the best in the world compete in a need for speed course. The rules are as follows: (From wikipedia)
The rules are simple, pilots must pass through each of the air gates correctly while completing the required aerobatic manoeuvres. Three different gate types require a specific manner of crossing. Blue gates must be crossed in level flight, red gates must be crossed in "knife-edge" or vertical flight, and the slalom gates as their name implies.
Penalties are incurred for violations of the rules.[2]
