The Olympic Games are for Pussies.

As the media amps up its hype machine for this years Beijing Olympics I again find myself asking the same question I do every four years, why are there no extreme sports involved?
Granted the Gymnastics and high diving is interesting to watch but I have never understood the fascination with watching swimming races, running and most athletics. (Pole Vault has its moments) Aside from being terribly dull onscreen (much like Cricket and Golf) I also fail to see the point. I mean sure the worlds fastest runner could escape a mugger with more speed than I, the swimming champs could survive a few seconds longer if they were being chased by a shark, but is that grounds for some accolades and medals? Back when we were cavemen these were important abilities, now however they just seem redundant.
After all there just doesn’t seem to be much more SKILL involved than what the average schmoe is capable of, just a lot more hours wasted in dedication to a very pedestrian past time.
More importantly is it exciting to watch, not at all. The elitist snobbery of the event really restricts the truly adrenalin pumping sports from ever entering the world stage. Just imagine how much more interesting it would be to tune in if you knew that big air skateboarding, motocross and BMX were on the schedule. Instead theye are restricted to less televised events like the X and Gravity Games, sad isn’t it?
What are your thoughts?
