Survivor Series Ambiguity
October 26th 2011 01:26
Monday night on Raw the show’s Interim General Manager John Laurinaitis announced at Survivor Series John Cena and a partner of Cena’s choosing will wrestle Awesome Truth (The Miz & R-Truth) in a tag team match. As the show went off air Cena publicly asked The Rock to team with him. For diehard WWE fans the end of Raw caused confusion given back on September 16th WWE.com announced The Rock would team with John Cena in a traditional Survivor Series tag team match.
The ambiguity leads one to speculate two different scenarios. First, the WWE still plans on having the Wrestlemania XVIII opponents team together in a traditional Survivor Series tag team match but want the bout to evolve on air through a storyline. Second, the WWE changed their minds and thus the tag team match will remain two against two. Only time will reveal the truth.
If the second option plays out, the blunder can be seen as an overzealous PR move. The Rock returning to action inside the squared circle stands out as a big deal. Obviously the WWE wanted to get the word out as soon as possible. However, sharing his exact participation provided more information than necessary. Making curious people watch the product to find out who “The Great One” will wrestle at the 25th Survivor Series seemed like a better option. In fact no matter which scenario occurs the September 16th announcement comes off as containing too much information, ultimately killing a potential rating increase.
