Road to Wrestlemania Begins
January 31st 2011 17:36
The 2011 Royal Rumble officially kicked off the road to Wrestlemania XXVII last night. If the Royal Rumble match itself foreshadows the road to April 3rd’s Wrestlemania, the journey will be unpredictable. Smackdown superstar Alberto Del Rio (ADR) surprised many wrestling fans by winning the Royal Rumble and securing a World Heavyweight Title or WWE Title match at the grand daddy of them all. The shock comes from Del Rio not having the same name value as past Royal Rumble winners, like John Cena and The Undertaker. However, the Rumble victory should help establish ADR as a credible name in the WWE Universe.
Other Royal Rumble match surprises included Booker T and Kevin Nash (as Diesel) cameos. The live crowd received the two stars warmly while the broadcast team couldn’t contain their excitement. Rumors will likely start to fly now about the two legends’s potential WWE futures. One poster on Rajah Forums, the wrestling forum I frequent, even speculated Kevin Nash and/or Booker T could receive inductions into the WWE’s 2011 Hall of Fame class. I like this idea for Nash because his former run-in buddy Shawn Michaels headlines the 2011 class. Seeing the two inducted at the same time would be a treat for wrestling fans from the 1990s.
If the road to Wrestlemania resembles the Royal Rumble match’s unpredictability, fans should remain entertained. With last night’s surprises the WWE’s two decade old catchphrase “Anything can happen in the WWF” comes to mind. The “Anything can happen in the WWF” era made for great TV and I hope the WWE will adopt the philosophy on the road to Wrestlemania XXVII.
