Road to Slammiversary IX

TNA celebrates their ninth anniversary Sunday, June 12th with their Slammiversary PPV. Impact Wrestling this past week continued the ride to Slammiversary. “The Phenomenal” AJ Styles and Bully Ray agreed to face off in a Last Man Standing match. Alex Shelley offered to substitute for the injured Robert Roode, turning the TNA Tag Team Titles bout into James Storm and Alex Shelley vs. British Invasion. These two matches add to an event featuring Sting vs. Mr. Anderson for the TNA Heavyweight Title, Kurt Angle vs. Jeff Jarrett one last time, and Crimson vs. Samoa Joe.
Mr. Anderson builds anticipation to his TNA Heavyweight Title match by dressing as the old surfer Sting and mocking Sting’s past. This behavior, while not only entertaining, gives a needed break from the stale “Where is my title shot?” routine. The feud reminds me of the one Chris Jericho and Bill Goldberg engaged in over a decade ago while in WCW. In the WCW rivalry Jericho built the feud on his own. Yes, Sting contributes to the current TNA Heavyweight Title storyline but Mr. Anderson seems like he’s carrying the brunt so far.
Crimson vs. Samoa Joe offers another intriguing rivalry. Crimson remains without a loss in his TNA singles matches. Crimson’s current win streak extends to five months. Samoa Joe, upon his arrival to TNA in 2005, enjoyed an unprecedented 18 month winning streak. Joe seems jealous of the attention Crimson’s winning streak currently receives and wants to hand Crimson his first loss. Crimson meanwhile looks to make Samoa Joe just another defeated opponent.
With one Impact Wrestling broadcast left before Slammiversary IX I’m interested to see if the Immortal/X-Division feud makes the card. Last week’s #1 Contender’s match for the X-Division Title between Brian Kendrick and Kazarian ended in a no contest after X-Division Champion Abyss interfered. After beating both men up Abyss declared “The X-Division is dead.” This leaves the audience wondering if anyone from the X-Division will take charge on the next Impact Wrestling broadcast and challenge Immortal’s Abyss at Slammiversary IX.
