“Macho Man,” aka “Macho King,” Randy Savage sent the wrestling world into mourning when he passed away Friday, May 20th 2011. Savage, a certified legend in the industry, apparently suffered a heart attack while driving. This led to a car accident which took the wrestler’s life. Upon hearing the tragic news I visited WWE and TNA Wrestling’s websites to confirm the story before watching “Macho Man” footage from the Best of Saturday Night’s Main Event and The History of the Intercontinental Championship DVDs.
Randy Savage wowed audiences by demonstrating all the skills needed to entertain crowds. “Macho Man” brought a new style to the ring, displaying high flying offense before wrestlers such as Rey Mysterio and AJ Styles popularized the style. Savage knew exactly how to act in order to get a rise from live audiences. Perhaps the attribute which launched “Macho Man” to greatness was his infectious enthusiasm. From promos to inside the ring the “Macho King” exhibited an exciting energy.
Randy Savage’s early “Macho King” moniker seems especially fitting now as Savage will forever live on as wrestling royalty. From his time tagging with Hulk Hogan as The Mega Powers to his Wrestlemania battles with the likes of Ricky Steamboat and Ric Flair, “Macho Man” truly left a lasting impression on wrestling fans everywhere, may he rest in peace.
