Introducing Summerslam Flashbacks
August 2nd 2012 05:57
Yes, I’m back. This time I’m taking a nostalgia-filled journey recalling memorable Summerslam moments as I countdown to WWE’s annual Summerslam PPV. WWE presents Summerslam Sunday, August 19th at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, CA. I will post regular flashbacks beginning today. Following today’s initial piece expect new flashbacks every Sunday and Monday until the PPV August 19th.
To kick off my Summerslam flashbacks, I revisit 1988 and the first ever Summerslam PPV. Honkey Tonk Man entered the event the longest reigning WWE Intercontinental Champion ever, much thanks to his manager Jimmy Hart. Originally Brutus “the Barber” Beefcake looked to challenge Honkey Tonk Man for the championship but an injury left Beefcake MIA.
Instead Honkey Tonk Man came out oozing confidence prepared to face a mystery challenger. Okay, perhaps his preparedness seems debatable based off what happened. The Intercontinental Champion grabbed a microphone and demanded somebody come out to wrestle him. The Ultimate Warrior’s music hits, sending a rushing excitement through the capacity crowd. Around a minute later The Ultimate Warrior stood tall, the new Intercontinental Champion.
Ultimately Honkey Tonk Man vs. The Ultimate Warrior served more as a segment than actual match. You know what though? The segment proves an incredibly memorable one.
