I recently finished watching “Greatest Stars of the 1990s”, a WWE DVD release from earlier this year. I was hesitant in buying “Greatest Stars of the 1990s” because I was highly disappointed by the 2005 release “The Greatest Wrestling Stars of the 80s”. Not growing up in the 1980s I was hoping the DVD would let me experience the best of the 1980s. Besides the Piper/Valentine dog collar match and the Flair/Steamboat Chi-Town Rumble match I was disappointed.
“Greatest Stars of the 1990s” is an improvement over the 1980s DVD release. All the wrestlers are profiled in one documentary. I found the tone of the documentary to be surprisingly positive. I would have thought the WWE would have been negative towards at least Kevin Nash and Scott Hall for the way they left the WWE to go to WCW but the documentary remained objective. The documentary also profiled Vince McMahon, Eric Bischoff, and Paul Heyman; not to mention the women of the 1990s and the worst gimmicks of the decade. I thought the documentary did a good job of capturing the vibe of the decade.
The match selection, while not including the absolute best matches of the decade, is fair. However, I wish there would have been more WCW matches. Out of the 16 matches, only three are from WCW. Matches I would recommend watching first are Bret Hart/Shawn Michaels from the 1992 Survivor Series, Bret Hart/Owen Hart from Wrestlemania X, and Sting/Bret Hart from Halloween Havoc 1998. Another match worth mentioning is Alundra Blayze versus Bull Nakano from an episode of Monday Night Raw. Those two women were ahead of their time.
