ECW- Making Comparisons
September 24th 2009 03:29
I remember how excited I was when the WWE re-launched ECW (Extreme Championship Wrestling) in the summer of 2006. As I watched the first episode of ECW on Sci-Fi my excitement turned into bitter disappoint faster than The Sandman ending the career of The Zombie. This ECW was not going to be the same ECW that revolutionized the wrestling business in the 1990s. As more and more ECW originals were released or moved to different brands ECW started to look less and less like the original ECW. Eventually all that was left of the original ECW was Tommy Dreamer and the letters ECW.
However, last night as I watched ECW I started getting flashbacks to the original ECW. The flashbacks started with the Yoshi Tatsu/Paul Burchill match; two unknown entities to mainstream wrestling fans, battling it out in a hard hitting match. 15 years earlier Eddie Guerrero and Dean Malenko were unknown entities to mainstream wrestling fans. In fact so were Rey Mysterio, Chris Jericho, and countless others. In the 1990s ECW gave those wrestlers the opportunity to become stars.
Today ECW continues to do so; just take a look at the current World Champion, CM Punk. CM Punk’s first national exposure was on ECW and his first title reign in the WWE Universe was as ECW Champion. Current Raw superstar, “The All-American American” Jack Swagger, will likely follow in the shoes of CM Punk. Perhaps Sheamus will too. The point is today’s ECW still mirrors the ECW of the 1990s.
