Destination X- Destined to Fail?

For being a long-time fan of TNA Wrestling (been watching since 2004), you would think I would be filled with excitement in regards to this year’s Destination X PPV featuring the stars of the X-Division. However, instead of excitement, I’m nervous for the X-Division wrestlers because TNA is setting up Destination X to fail.

The first problem with an X-Division PPV is TNA doesn’t give enough airtime to develop the personalities of the X-Division wrestlers. The X-Division usually receives one segment per iMPACT broadcast, typically a five minute, multi-man match. This is sad considering the potential the X-Division has. The X-Division should be an instrumental part of TNA, with the division being anchored by Kaz and “Black Machismo” Jay Lethal.

Between 2007 and 2008 Kaz established himself as a star. Kaz beat Christian Cage in a great ladder match, and then nearly defeated Kurt Angle for the TNA World Heavyweight Title on iMPACT. Kaz shined in the spotlight again in 2008 captaining Team TNA in the World X Cup. Instead of riding the momentum Kaz had going for himself, TNA removed Kaz from television. What sense did that make? Sure, now he’s back, but he’s nothing more than another X-Division guy, which is a far cry from where he should be.

The same goes for Jay Lethal. Lethal holds a clean pinfall victory over Kurt Angle. Lethal went over big time in the X-Division/Team 3D feud a few years back. But what position is Lethal in now? The last two times Lethal wrestled on iMPACT he lost to Jim Neidhart and Tatanka. Jay Lethal and Kaz should be the backbone to the X-Division, the way AJ Styles and Samoa Joe were in 2005, but instead Lethal and Kaz have been turned into just two more X-Division wrestlers.

To make matters worse, Destination X takes places seven days before Wrestlemania, the biggest wrestling PPV every year. What this means is wrestling fans who might ordinarily order an X-Division PPV won’t, so they can afford to purchase Wrestlemania. I just hope TNA management doesn’t pawn off the blame for Destination X’s destined failure onto the X-Division guys being unable to draw.
