Countdown to Lockdown Thoughts Part II
June 7th 2011 16:42
A week and a half passed since my first Countdown to Lockdown post. I actually finished Mick Foley’s fourth memoir last week but wanted to hold off on this post until I found an opportunity to re-watch Foley’s TNA Heavyweight Title match with Sting. After reading Foley’s insights on the bout I noticed elements I didn’t spot the first two times watching. My overall enjoyment for the match, however, stayed the same. The Lockdown 2009 main event offers an entertaining bout but doesn’t rank up with Foley’s finest, such as his encounters with Triple H at Summerslam 1997 and Randy Orton at Backlash 2004.
Foley shares fun facts surrounding his match with Sting in Countdown to Lockdown, making the book intriguing for diehard wrestling fans. For example, originally TNA planned to order a custom made cage to help hide Mick’s weaknesses. Due to cost though, TNA opted not to order the specially designed cage. This created internal concern for Foley about whether he could perform at the main event level he desired.
Honestly, I found Countdown to Lockdown a step down from Mick Foley’s third memoir, The Hardcore Diaries. Mick Foley fans should still like Countdown to Lockdown though. I especially found Foley’s “Afterword” interesting. Foley waited a year to write the “Afterword” and uses the section to reflect on Lockdown 2009. Foley teaches a solid lesson at the book’s end “(Don’t) allow anyone else to define what success is. We get to do that for ourselves.”
