CM Punk WWE Career Reflection Part I
July 14th 2011 02:57
CM Punk’s threat to win the WWE Title this Sunday at the Money in the Bank PPV and walkout from the WWE with the company’s prize possession leaves “The Straight Edge Superstar” the hot topic amongst the wrestling industry. As the days melt away to this Sunday and the “What’s going to happen?” anticipation continues to build, I’d like to take this time to start a two part post analyzing highlights from CM Punk’s WWE career.
WWE Debut
“The Straight Edge Superstar” made his WWE debut in June 2006 on ECW. The volatile Hammerstein Ballroom crowd chanted Punk’s name, warmly embracing the new superstar. Punk defeated ECW original Justin Credible in a short bout featuring some offense from both competitors. The WWE built up Punk’s debut well, airing weekly 30-second backstage segments introducing the WWE audience to the emerging wrestler.
Punk Becomes ECW Champion
CM Punk won his first WWE gold in September 2007 when he beat ECW Champion John Morrison on an ECW broadcast. Punk and Morrison gave the television audience a PPV quality match. Commentators Joey Styles and Taz assisted in giving the title bout a big match feeling, building up the ECW Title’s legacy and describing the two wrestlers’ past history. As we know now the ECW Title only marked the beginning to CM Punk’s WWE success.
CM Punk is Money
The fact Punk threatens to leave the WWE after the Money in the Bank PPV proves ironic because Money in the Bank played a vital role in “The Straight Edge Superstar’s” WWE career. CM Punk won his first World Heavyweight Title from Edge by cashing in the Money in the Bank briefcase Punk won at Wrestlemania 24. Punk triumphed over veterans like Chris Jericho and Shelton Benjamin in order to earn the briefcase.
