CM Punk, “The Straight Edge Superstar,” threatens to win the WWE Title Sunday, July 17th at Money in the Bank and leave the company. Punk announced on Raw his WWE contract ends Sunday, July 17th, the day he challenges WWE Champion John Cena for the WWE Title. Wrestling fans speculate whether or not Punk’s remarks represent truth or storyline. Either way the weeks leading up to Money in the Bank shall prove intriguing.
The fact the 2011 Money in the Bank PPV will resonate from Chicago, CM
Punk’s hometown, adds further interest. WWE history shows how location plays a role in making a bout memorable. Two examples include The Hart Foundation vs. Stone Cold, Goldust, Ken Shamrock, & LOD at Canadian Stampede 1997 and Edge vs. John Cena in a TLC match from Unforgiven 2006. Earlier this year at a Raw in Chicago locals showed a willingness to cheer Punk even though Punk held the antagonist role in his feud with Randy Orton.
These “threaten to leave an organization with a title” storylines offer compelling television. Team 3D, back when known as The Dudley Boys, threatened to lay the ECW Tag Team Titles on Vince McMahon’s desk after winning the championships during their last night in ECW. Tommy Dreamer, with the returning Raven offering an assist, won the ECW Tag Team Titles before the night finished. Given the Money in the Bank matches likely to take place earlier in the night, we might witness a similar situation. Punk defeats Cena in a hard fought match to win the WWE Title. As Punk gloats about leaving WWE with the title the Raw Money in the Bank winner comes out and cashes in on Punk.
