Christian, Instant or Classic?

Finally, after 17 years in the wrestling industry Christian, aka “Captain Charisma,” won the World Heavyweight Title. Christian proves no stranger to holding a company’s top prize. During his TNA Wrestling stint Christian won the TNA Heavyweight Title twice. Still, as Joey Styles pointed out on commentary at ECW One Night Stand 2005 winning the WWE Title or World Heavyweight Title marks a wrestler’s greatest accomplishment.
My initial plan this week entailed letting the first Smackdown in the Christian Championship era air before writing a blog post detailing my excitement for Christian’s title victory and how his time in TNA Wrestling showed Christian contains the skill set to have an entertaining reign as World Heavyweight Champion. The WWE, however, derailed these plans by having Christian lose the World Heavyweight Title during his first title defense.
I, honestly, don’t know what to make of Christian losing the World Heavyweight Title so soon. The camera focusing on Christian’s emotion following the bout seems to indicate an intriguing storyline up ahead. Yet I remain disappointed Christian’s first reign as World Heavyweight Champion only lasted five days. On the wrestling forum I frequent (Rajah) people seem to maintain a positive outlook, reflecting back on Christian’s victory at Extreme Rules as a truly special moment. Personally, I think the short reign weakens the specialness surrounding Christian’s World Heavyweight Title win. I mean, would Eddie Guerrero’s victory over Brock Lesnar for the WWE Title at No Way Out 2004 been as great if Guerrero came out and lost the title to Kurt Angle the same week?
In TNA Wrestling Christian received the moniker “The Instant Classic.” I hope Christian’s future contains a World Heavyweight Title reign which lasts longer than an “instant” and can go down in the record books as a “classic.”
