Over the past decade WWE Home Video released many quality compilation DVDs. In fact WWE Home Video released so many compilation DVDs you can understandably pass on a great DVD during the initial release. Often times though you can go back years later and purchase missed DVDs for fantastic prices. “Born to Controversy the Roddy Piper Story” serves as one excellent deal to get in on if you didn’t buy the DVD when originally released in 2006.
Personally I bought the three disc “Born to Controversy the Roddy Piper Story” set earlier this year from Amazon for less than $7. The purchase proves my best wrestling DVD bargain, unseating “Mick Foley’s Greatest Hits & Misses Hardcore Edition” WWE Home Video loaded “Born to Controversy the Roddy Piper Story” with great content. Disc one contains a documentary, disc two matches, and disc three great Piper Pit segments both past and present (well present as in 2006).
Roddy Piper shares two comments during the documentary which stand out. First he argues he deserves as much if not more credit than Hulk Hogan for the first Wrestlemania’s success, noting fans tuned in not to see Hulk Hogan but to see Roddy Piper receive a beat down. In the second comment Piper calls his Wrestlemania 2 boxing match with Mr. T the worst match of his career. The words grab you by surprise due to the raw honesty behind them.
Disc two demonstrates Roddy Piper’s vast in ring skill. Most impressively Piper knew how to change up his style to better compliment his opponents. Three matches which exemplify this include Wrestlemania I when Piper teamed with Paul Orndorff to wrestle Hulk Hogan & Mr. T, Wrestlemania VIII when Piper challenged Bret Hart for the IC Title, and Wrestlemania XII’s street fight with Goldust. Disc three goes on to prove Piper’s skills transcended the wrestling ring onto the microphone. You can’t help but have fun watching the different Piper Pits.
In conclusion, you won’t regret buying “Born to Controversy the Roddy Piper Story.” If anything after watching the DVD, you will become depressed about the WWE’s current product. He may never have held a world heavyweight title in the WWE but “The Hot Scot,” “Rowdy” Roddy Piper possessed a talent rivaled only by few.
