The 2000s will largely be remembered for the WWE and TNA Wrestling. However, let us not forget that at the beginning of the decade both WCW and ECW gave an alternative to the WWE. In August of 2000 Extreme Championship Wrestling captured the attention of fans everywhere when Psicosis returned to the ECW Arena and wrestled Tajiri.
To me the Tajiri/Psicosis match showcases everything the professional wrestling industry should be. The fans in the arena were lively, giving the bout an excellent atmosphere. Joey Styles, perhaps the best wrestling announcer of the past 20 years, called the match the way wrestling should be called- as a sport’s competition. And finally the match itself was a display of athleticism from both competitors.
As far as importance goes the bout was the past (Psicosis) versus the present (Tajiri). Psicosis was an innovator of cruiserweight wrestling in America. Psicosis, along with the likes of Rey Mysterio and Juventud Guerrera, paved the way for the next generation of cruiserweights, like Tajiri. Getting the chance to see Psicosis wrestle Tajiri could be considered a dream come true to fans of cruiserweight wrestling.
