In my last “Best of the Decade” post I highlighted AJ Styles, a wrestler who enjoyed a very successful decade. In today’s post I am highlighting somebody who had a very similar decade, Rey Mysterio. The decade for Rey Mysterio started with the part of his career which no one talks about- wrestling without a mask in WCW. After WCW went out of business in 2001 Rey Mysterio disappeared from mainstream wrestling in America. In 2002 Rey Mysterio resurfaced as he joined the WWE and was placed on the Smackdown! brand.
For the rest of the decade Rey Mysterio entertained the WWE Universe with his great athleticism and high flying ability. Mysterio had many memorable matches, including matches with the likes of Tajiri, Eddie Guerrero, and Kurt Angle. The highlight of Rey Mysterio’s decade has to be when he won the World Heavyweight Championship at Wrestlemania 22.
Rey Mysterio’s World Heavyweight Title win proves dreams can come true. I’m sure nobody took Rey Mysterio seriously when he wanted to become a professional wrestler. After all, Rey was too small to be any good. Rey Mysterio, however, silenced the doubters by making the most out of his time in ECW in the mid 1990s. Mysterio’s success in ECW led him to WCW and eventually the WWE. Rey Mysterio is one of my favorite wrestlers and I look forward to seeing what he achieves in this decade.
