Best of the Decade: Rob Van Dam vs Jeff Hardy (Invasion)
December 15th 2009 04:22
Put into simple terms the WCW/ECW invasion was an epic disappoint. A big reason the invasion angle did not succeed is Vince McMahon did not have the likes of Eric Bischoff, Goldberg, Sting, and Ric Flair. Without these stars Vince McMahon could not deliver the dream matches the fans wanted to see. However, despite the cloud of disappointment that surrounded the invasion, the WWE did end up delivering one dream match- Rob Van Dam versus Jeff Hardy.
In the 1990s Rob Van Dam made a name for himself in Extreme Championship Wrestling with some classic matches, against the likes of Sabu, Bam Bam Bigelow, and Jerry Lynn. Jeff Hardy captured the attention of WWE fans by being an innovator of the TLC match. Both wrestlers were young, exciting, and athletic.
Rob Van Dam and Jeff Hardy’s bout at Invasion was one of the few highlights of the entire invasion angle. The escalation of the match is really what makes the bout standout. Rob Van Dam and Jeff Hardy start with an exchange which showcases both wrestlers’ athletic ability. The match begins to pick up when Jeff Hardy pulls out a ladder from the ring. Eventually Rob Van Dam turns to his weapon of choice, the chair. The match’s progression is the reason the bout should be considered amongst the “best of the decade”.
