Some people have trouble understanding the concept of professional wrestling due to its “fake” nature. Many consider wrestling low brow entertainment. However, the truth is wrestling is a spectacle. Good wrestling combines emotion and athleticism in order to create entertainment. Sometimes the entertainment portion taints wrestling by being too over the top. Sadly, sometimes it takes a death of somebody in the wrestling industry to remind others in the business what professional wrestling is really about. Such was the case with the death of Eddie Guerrero.
The week following Eddie Guerrero’s death included tribute shows in which the athleticism and emotion of the wrestlers took center stage. A match which sticks out from these tribute shows was Rey Mysterio versus Shawn Michaels from Raw. Rey Mysterio and Shawn Michaels are very similar but yet very different. For diehard wrestling fans Rey Mysterio versus Shawn Michaels was a dream match and the two wrestlers did not disappoint.
In my opinion what takes Rey Mysterio versus Shawn Michaels to “Best of the Decade” status is the commentary of Joey Styles. Joey Styles has a different commentary style than most wrestling announcers. Joey Styles treats wrestling like a sport, not a narrated soap opera. The WWE tried to change Joey Styles announcing style but I could sense that the Joey Styles calling the Rey Mysterio/Shawn Michaels match was the old ECW Joey Styles. Rey Mysterio, Shawn Michaels, and Joey Styles all did well in this match in order to entertain the fans and more importantly pay respect to the one and only Eddie Guerrero.
