Best of the Decade- Mick Foley vs Randy Orton (Backlash 2004)
December 7th 2009 16:34
Mick Foley versus Randy Orton from Backlash 2004 is not only amongst the best of the decade but this match will stand the test of time as a Foley classic. This Mick Foley/Randy Orton bout is right up there with Foley’s hard hitting matches with Vader and wild affairs with Terry Funk. When people speak about the best of Mick Foley they will talk about Mick Foley/Shawn Michaels from Mind Games, the Hell in a Cell match with the Undertaker, and Backlash 2004.
The storyline going into this bout was well built. Randy Orton tried to end the career of Mick Foley by throwing the legend down a flight of stairs months earlier. Foley returned for Wrestlemania and teamed with The Rock to fight Orton, Batista, and Flair in a handicap match. The Rock & Sock Connection came up short at Wrestlemania, but Foley wasn’t ready to except defeat. Foley looked to avenge the loss the best way he knew how- a no holds bar match.
Randy Orton and Mick Foley both took and gave some hard hitting shots. Some of the spots in the match will make your jaw drop as you stare at your television screen in disbelief. Adding even more to the match is the crowd. Too often are the WWE crowds quiet. However, those in attendance at Backlash 2004 knew they were seeing something special. This is illustrated by chants of “Holy $hit” and “E-C-W” plus roars of amazement after Randy Orton refused to stay down for the three. I have a feeling in another 10 years fans will still be talking about Randy Orton versus Mick Foley from Backlash 2004.
