A Historic Summerslam?
August 13th 2011 16:44
Sunday, August 14th the WWE presents Summerslam on PPV. The Summerslam main event makes history. For the first time ever two individuals hold the WWE Title. CM Punk defeated John Cena at Money in the Bank to win the championship. However after that night CM Punk left the company. As a result a tournament occurred to crown a new WWE Champion. Rey Mysterio won the tournament only to lose the championship to John Cena in his first defense. Now CM Punk and John Cena will face off to determine the Undisputed WWE Champion.
To anyone who follows athletics champion vs. champion competition sounds appealing. Unfortunately the WWE Champion vs. WWE Champion match loses appeal because the bout feels too fabricated. Yes, you can easily argue pro wrestling in its very nature breathes fabrication. Yet the most compelling pro wrestling television gives an allusion of legitimacy. CM Punk only remained off WWE television for eight days, eight! This means the WWE rushed the new WWE Title onto Cena to make sure they could setup this “historic” title match. In the process not enough time passed for fans to legitimately care.
What could the WWE have done different? I believe the best route involved utilizing the 30 days title defense rule. If CM Punk doesn’t sign a new contract and defend the WWE Title within 30 days, he forfeits the title. At that point you hold a tournament to find a new champion. After using social media to criticize the paper champion for a few weeks CM Punk signs a new contract, leading to a more important WWE Champion vs. WWE Champion bout.
