2011- The Year of Returns for WWE
March 8th 2011 17:59
For WWE fans the past three months have been very exciting as superstar after superstar have made returns. Shawn Michaels started off the trend when he appeared on Raw in January after being announced as the headliner for the WWE Hall of Fame 2011 class. Kevin Nash (under his old gimmick Diesel) and Booker T made surprise appearances at the Royal Rumble. The Rock had fans everywhere elated when he announced live on Raw that he will host Wrestlemania XXVII. The notorious Trish Stratus made her return at the Elimination Chamber PPV when she was revealed as a trainer for the upcoming Tough Enough season. Veterans Triple H and The Undertaker resurfaced after several months hiatuses on 2-21-11. Christian and Evan Bourne both returned recently from injuries too.
Last night the WWE continued to roll out the returns during the segment where Michael Cole announced the special guest referee for his Wrestlemania match against Jerry “the King” Lawler. Stone Cold Steve Austin’s return had already been announced the week before and Cole used that to bait the fans into thinking he was going to pick Austin as the referee. Cole, instead, laughed at the crowd for their naïve nature before announcing the surprise return of former WWE Champion JBL. On a side note, Austin did end up becoming the special guest referee.
The return trend has made the WWE very exciting to watch. The enthusiasm the crowd shows when a legend, like Shawn Michaels or The Rock, walk out from the curtain energizes you and reminds you of why you started watching wrestling in the first place. I personally look forward to seeing if the WWE has anymore returns to parade out as the road to Wrestlemania XXVII continues.
